At Serenity Funerals service we are very passionate about sustainable funeral choices. Our values and green funeral choices are a reflection of our commitment to the well-being of both people and the planet. Here are a few reasons why sustainability is not only important but also compassionate for our home and the community we serve.
Environmental Impact
- Reducing Carbon Footprint: Traditional funeral practices, including embalming, metal coffin fixtures, and gas cremation, can contribute significantly to carbon emissions and pollution. Sustainable funerals, such as green burials and electric cremations such as Huntingdon Crematorium, our local crematorium, reduce the environmental impact by using biodegradable materials, reducing waste, and cutting down on harmful emissions.
- Decreasing Waste: Many traditional funerals involve non-biodegradable materials (like metal or plastic coffins, and concrete vaults) that can take decades or longer to decompose. Sustainable funerals prioritise biodegradable materials, meaning less waste accumulates in the earth and fewer resources are consumed.
- Conserving Land: Green burial options allow for a more natural return of the body to the earth, without the use of harmful chemicals or non-biodegradable materials. This can preserve natural spaces and forests while avoiding the overuse of cemetery land. At Serenity funeral service, we are located just 10 minutes from our local green burial ground in Keysoe, Bedfordshire.
Offering sustainable funeral choices is a great way to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly options while maintaining compassion and care for our families during difficult times. Here are some sustainable funeral options you could consider that we offer to our families at your local independent funeral home:
Biodegradable Coffins
- At Serenity Funerals service we offer families the option of a wide range of biodegradable coffins made from materials like willow, bamboo, or cardboard manufactured in the UK. These coffins are naturally decomposing and reduce the impact on the environment.
Eco-Friendly Urns
Following a cremation, Serenity Funerals service can provide urns made from natural materials such as bamboo, salt, or recycled paper and cardboard. Some biodegradable urns can even be planted with a tree or flower after use.
Cremation Options
Serenity Funerals service is located just 20 minutes from Huntingdon crematorium. Our local crematorium is the UK’s second purpose build eco-friendly crematorium. It houses 2 electric cremators opposed to gas. Excess energy produced by the operation is recycled.
Green Burial
- A green burial is an environmentally conscious option where the body is returned to the earth without chemicals, preservatives, or non-biodegradable materials. The body is placed in a biodegradable coffin. Our local green burial ground in Keysoe, Bedfordshire is located just 10 minutes from Serenity’s funeral home.

Sustainable Flowers
- At Serenity Funerals service we work with a local, eco-conscious florist who use locally grown, organic flowers for funeral arrangements, wherever possible. No Plastics or oasis are used if requested.

Legacy and Lasting Impact
- Creating Positive Legacies: Sustainable funerals offer families a way to leave a lasting impact that extends beyond their immediate circle. Planting trees or contributing to land conservation can create a meaningful legacy that grows and benefits the earth for years to come.
- Reflecting a Legacy of Care: Choosing a sustainable funeral option can be seen as a final act of compassion for the planet and future generations. It can reflect a person’s life philosophy of caring for others and making responsible, thoughtful choices.
At Serenity Funerals service, we take our responsibilities as a business to be as sustainable as possible. We reduce the waste of paper wherever possible by offering families online tribute pages and obituaries. We also reduce the use of chemicals wherever possible.
We believe in offering families eco-friendly, sustainable funeral options that are cost-effective alternatives to traditional funeral choices.
We are proud members of the Association of Green Funeral directors.
