Supporting Families After Suicide – You’re Not Alone

Losing someone to suicide is one of the most difficult experiences a family can face. At Serenity Funeral Service in St Neots and serving Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire, we understand that the grief you feel may be different from any other — and the support you need must be sensitive, compassionate, and tailored to your situation.

The Numbers & What They Tell Us

  • In England and Wales in 2023 there were 6,069 suicides registered, equivalent to an age-standardised rate of 11.4 deaths per 100,000 people. Office for National Statistics+1
  • Suicide is considerably more common among men than women: in 2023 the male rate was around 17.4 per 100,000, and for females 5.7 per 100,000. House of Commons Library+1
  • Between August 2023 and October 2024 in suspected suicides in England, about 74% were males, and more than a third occurred in the age group 45-64 years. gov.uk
These statistics remind us of the scale of the issue – but behind every number is a person, a family, a community.

How You May Be Feeling

When someone dies by suicide, family and friends often experience a complex mix of emotions, including:

  • Shock and disbelief — “How did this happen?”
  • Guilt or regret — “Could I have done something differently?”
  • Anger or frustration — “Why didn’t they ask for help?”
  • Deep sadness and longing — “I miss them everyday.”
  • Isolation — the feeling that others don’t understand or that you must carry this alone.
  • Fear about what others might think or say, especially around the circumstances of death.

All of these are natural responses. There is no “right” way to grieve, and there is no set timeline for how long healing takes.

What We Can Do to Support You

At Serenity Funeral Service, we commit to supporting families affected by suicide with the same dignity, care and attention we provide in all circumstances, while being especially mindful of your needs in these difficult times.

Here’s how we help:
1. Gentle, judgment-free guidance
We will take the time to listen to you, understand your wishes and your loved one’s wishes, and guide you through what needs to be done—without pressuring you.
2. Practical support
From paperwork and formalities to choosing a service that feels right, we look after the details so you can focus on what matters.
3. Personalised farewell
You may wish for a quiet, private gathering, or a ceremony where people share memories and speak openly about what’s happened. We help make the service meaningful and respectful.
4. Compassionate sign-posting
Grief after suicide is complex. We can provide information on trusted bereavement support organisations, listening services and local resources so you are not left to navigate this alone.
5. Ongoing support
After the service, many families continue to find comfort in talking about their loved one, remembering them and finding ways to honour their memory. We remain available if you need to revisit any aspect of the funeral, or simply want a listening ear.

What You Can Do for Yourself

  • Reach out to someone you trust — a friend, family member, or professional — and tell them how you feel.
  • Remember it’s okay to say: “I don’t feel okay.” You don’t have to pretend.
  • Take time, gently. It’s okay to rest, to sit with your feelings, and to allow others to support you.
  • Share stories about your loved one. Talking about them helps you remember them, not just their passing.
  • Consider joining a support group specifically for those bereaved by suicide—there you’ll find people who understand your journey.
  • Know that you are not alone. The numbers tell us many people are affected, but your experience is unique and you deserve support.
